Sam is a 5th-grade artist.
He not only works with excellence in the art room but he is always creating cool things at home. He paints on wood, papers, cardboard - whatever he can find to make art. He is interested in imaginative and surreal settings. He uses perspective on an advanced level and makes designs with a variety of geometric shapes. At times, his work borders on abstract, and yet his sculptures are whimsical and fantasy filled. One can imagine him as an adult with a large studio filled with all kinds of art supplies and tools, like Alexander Calder. We look forward to seeing what new creations he makes during the year! | View Sam's Gallery »

Teacher's Notes

Sept. 12 - The school year has started with a three-and-one-half week artist in residence, Jing Jy Chen. She currently has a show in Columbia that we encourage our families to visit:

http://www.artistsgallerycolumbia.com
http://family-computing.com/cbp.htm

She is teaching all grade levels, every day, the art of Chinese Brush painting. She is from Tiawan and has studied Sumi painting for more than 40 years! See her with our students. The upper grades are starting to learn how to paint bamboo, and the younger students are beginning with painting dragonflies. They are all learning how to hold the brush up straight and apply several colors to the brush to create special effects. They also have learned about Chinese culture and traditions. Mrs. Hastings is integrating a unit with Chinese folktales in Media and Mr. Hoffner is touching upon the music and memories from this year's Summer Olympics in China.

We will also be learning about haiku in the classrooms. Mark your calendars for Thursday evening, Oct. 2. On that night, from 7 to 8 p.m., we will have a schoolwide show showcasing each student's work with Mrs. Chen. There will be refreshments, as well. Please come out and meet Mrs. Chen and see the beautiful student art work!
